What is a UK Student Visa?
The UK Student Visa, previously known as the Tier 4 (General) student visa, allows international students to study at UK institutions. This visa is applicable for courses longer than six months, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and other higher education programs.
Requirements for a UK Student visa
To successfully apply for a UK Student Visa, you must meet several key requirements:
1. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
You must have an unconditional offer of a place on a course from a licensed student sponsor. Your institution will provide you with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), a unique reference number you will need for your visa application.
2. Financial Requirements
You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and pay for your course. The amount required varies depending on the location of your institution. For instance, students in London need to show more funds than those studying outside London.
3. English Language Proficiency
You need to prove your knowledge of the English language. This is typically done by passing an approved English language test, such as IELTS unless you are from an English-speaking country or have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in an English-speaking country.
4. Tuberculosis Test Results
If you are from a country where you need to take a tuberculosis (TB) test, you must provide the test results as part of your application.
Depending on the type of your appication and circumstances, you must meet all the other eligibility requirements. Schedule a consultation with our UK immigration solicitor for your eligibility assessments.
UK Student visa processing time
You should get a decision on your UK Student visa within 3 weeks if you are making the visa application from outside the UK by using standard service. Time starts once you've applied online and attended your biometric appointment.
For those applying for a Student visa from inside of the UK, the Home Office (UKVI) aims to process visa applications within 8 weeks.
Extending UK Student visa
UK Student visa holders may be able to extend their Student visa from inside the UK if they want to continue their course or want to study a new course.
If you want to extend your Student visa, you must meet all the eligibility requirements as set out in Appendix Student of the Immigration Rules.
The earliest you can apply for the extension is 3 months before your course starts. You must apply before your current Student visa expires. Your new course must begin within 28 days of your current visa expiring.
